Brand identity: the first budget to plan
Most restaurateurs plan their kitchen equipment, their menu and their fit-out months ahead. The visual identity gets added at the last minute, out of whatever budget is left.
That is a costly strategic mistake. At AGS Signs we work with restaurateurs with the experience of a sign maker with 30 years in the trade, and the businesses that invest in their image from the start consistently build stronger recognition in their first six months.
The six components of a complete identity
1. Logo and brand guide
The foundation of everything. Your logo must be simple, memorable and work at every size — from a stamp to a four-metre sign. The brand guide defines exact colours, typefaces and usage rules.
- Realistic budget: $800 – $3,000
- Timeline: 2 to 4 weeks
- Files you need: vector (AI/EPS), transparent PNG, colour and black-and-white versions
2. Your restaurant sign
The first visual contact with your future customers. A restaurant sign has to be visible day and night, readable in seconds from across the street, and set the mood of your place before anyone has seen the menu.
The right type of sign depends mostly on your positioning:
- Fine dining or bistro: halo-lit channel letters, for a soft glow on the façade
- Quick service or franchise: a push-through light box, which faithfully reproduces a standardized logo
- Busy commercial street: a blade sign as well, the one pedestrians read as they walk up the street
- Terrace or entrance to shelter: a marquee with lettering
- Dining room and window: flexible LED neon, very popular in bars and restaurants
- Budget: $2,000 – $15,000 depending on type and size
- Timeline: 4 to 8 weeks (permit included)
Our work includes the channel letter sign for Mont Tacos and the blade sign for Le Ice & Tacos, in Montreal. Every type is covered on our commercial signage page. Whatever you choose, the sign must be authorized by the borough before it goes up: see our permit guide.
3. Window graphics and the frontage
Your windows are free advertising space. Well-designed window graphics draw the eye, create privacy and reinforce your brand.
- Budget: $500 – $4,000 depending on area
- Types: perforated vinyl, frosted vinyl, brand decals
4. Interior signage
Menu boards, section wayfinding, wall décor carrying your identity: this is the territory of interior fit-out. Customers who photograph your space and post it do your marketing for free — provided the interior is worth photographing.
- Budget: $1,000 – $8,000 depending on scope
- Options: large format prints, cut letters, wall decals
5. Printed materials
Menus, business cards, napkins, bags, custom delivery boxes. Every point of contact with your customer is a chance to reinforce your brand — including the one that leaves with the order.
- Budget: $500 – $3,000 (depending on quantities and materials)
6. A consistent digital presence
Your logo, colours and tone should be identical on Google Business, Facebook, Instagram, Yelp and your website. Consistency between the physical and the digital doubles how well your brand is remembered.
